How I got into canoe slalom

Elliott-Davidson-in-slalom-kitI was introduced to the sport by a family friend who previously competed in the sport many years ago. He wanted to get back into it and asked our family if we were interested. We took up this opportunity and joined Manchester Canoe Club (MCC) in the summer of 2007. At that time MCC had just started up a new coaching scheme for young paddlers called Marlins. I was lucky enough to be able to join this coaching group. Unfortunately during that summer I gained a sports hernia which put me out for several months, however several operations later I was back fighting fit and raring to go. I took part in my first competition a season later at Stafford and Stone and got promoted from division 4 to division 3.

Where I’m currently at

I have just been selected to represent the Ireland Senior Canoe Slalom team for the 2016 season. Last season I finished ranking 21st in the British premiere division. I train full time which is 6 days a week, on the water and also land based training. I’m have moved down to Nottingham as this will help further my paddling career as the National White Water Centre is close by. I look to enter every competition for my division (this next year there are 11). These are located all over the UK from Scotland to Wales and as far down as London. I will now get to travel all over the world racing for Ireland.

My Education

I have completed my GCSE’s and I got all B’s & C’s at Tytherington High School. I then made the decision to stay on and study A-Levels at the Sixth Form. I studied double Business Studies and Finance in which I got Distinction, B and C. I now work with Impression a digital marketing agency in Nottingham, I’m learning lots of new ways to promote myself. I’m continuously implementing the things I learn to further my promotion.

My Interests

Obviously, my main interest is canoe slalom when I’m not doing this I love to do all sorts of stuff. In the little spare time I have I love to do a variety of sports but most of all the important factor is that they are extreme and give you that adrenaline buzz. I like to take part in river running, kayak surfing and when I’m not near water mountain biking, skiing and bouldering. When not doing sport my other interests are website design and development, gaming, a spot of video editing and photography. If for some reason I still have a bit of free time I like to do the odd qualification and get some awards to my name. I’m done my BCU 3 star, BCU level one coaching and BCU slalom coaching module. Where possible I help with coaching and have been lucky enough to coach at club and regional level.
